Make Your Voice Heard: Tell the BLM You Support Action to Curb Natural Gas Waste

It’s time—the Bureau of Land Management (BLM)’s proposed rule to curb natural gas waste has been published in the Federal Register, meaning the BLM needs to hear from YOU about why this rule is good for your community—and what would make it stronger.

This proposed rule is a win-win-win for industry, communities, and western economies. Reduced flaring and venting means that more natural gas is captured, as opposed to wasted—gas that generates royalty revenue for taxpayers and local budgets, profit for industry, and jobs for hardworking Americans.

At present, enough natural gas is wasted through venting, flaring and leaks on our public lands each year to meet the home energy needs of a city the size of Chicago—3.8 million people. Without the updates the proposed rule suggests for oil and gas technology, taxpayers would stand to lose hundreds of millions of dollars over the next decade—millions which could be used to fund critical existing gaps in local, county and state budgets.

But now, with the rule in place, it’s reasonable to assume that significantly less gas will be wasted—generating more money, and jobs, for the oil and gas industry in the process. Companies like Moser Energy Systems, who specialize in natural gas-fired generators to power well pad pumps (instead of traditional diesel), will likely see an increase in demand for their technology with the rule in place—which will save companies money in the long run, and create jobs in the meantime.

Now, it’s your turn to weigh in. The BLM needs to hear from you on the importance of this rule for westerners and western economies. Click here to make your voice heard and submit a comment to the BLM.
